ARIA completes acquisition of bitumen assets

December 2021 I Capital Markets

ARIA Commodities has successfully completed its acquisition of its Hamriyah bitumen complex from GP Global. This significant acquisition includes the entire bitumen operation, marking a notable expansion for ARIA Commodities in the bitumen sector. The sale forms a part of GP Global’s broader plan to streamline its operations through a series of divestments.

The move enhances ARIA’s operational capabilities and market presence in the petrochemical arena, and is consistent with ongoing efforts to expand its infrastructure and storage capacities, thereby fortifying its trading position in the global commodities market.

Bitumen, a viscous substance derived from crude oil, plays an indispensable role in modern infrastructure. Its unique properties make it highly versatile and essential for various applications beyond its traditional use. Technological advancements have led to innovations such as Polymer Modified Bitumen, Oxidized Bitumen, and Bitumen Emulsions, improving bitumen’s performance and environmental footprint – all of which are produced and sold at the Hamriyah facilities.

In construction applications where adhesive qualities are essential—especially with regard to temperature fluctuations—bitumen stands out as an indispensable material. Its primary role is in road construction where it serves as a key component for surfacing roads but also acts as an effective waterproofing agent sealing our buildings from moisture penetration. Thus bitumen plays an integral part behind the scenes supporting modern infrastructure by facilitating safe travel on paved surfaces while also preserving the integrity of our building envelopes against water damage.

Circular Economies and Sustainable Roads

In an era of heightened environmental awareness, sustainable road construction has become imperative. Bitumen, a crucial material in road construction, plays a significant role in this sustainable approach. Sustainable road construction refers to practices that minimize environmental impact and promote the efficient use of resources.

Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology, for example, allows asphalt to be produced and laid at lower temperatures, reducing energy consumption and emissions. Benefits include lower greenhouse gas emissions, improved working conditions, and extended paving season.

Moreover, Bio-based binders are being developed as alternatives to petroleum-derived bitumen, utilising renewable resources such as bio-mass. These binders reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower the carbon footprint of road construction. Crumb Rubber Bitumen incorporates recycled rubber into bitumen improves road performance and utilises waste materials. For example, the use of rubberised asphalt in California has reduced waste tire stockpiles and improved road durability.

Case Studies

The Netherlands has implemented numerous sustainable road projects using recycled materials and innovative technologies like WMA. In India, waste plastic is used in bitumen mixtures to enhance road strength and reduce plastic waste. The impacts are far reaching, reduced emissions, lower costs, and extended road life, not to mention when plastics are used in road surfacing, significant reduction in plastic pollution, which often ends up in oceans.
